EC Blue
E coli and Coliforms water test kit
EC Blue is a simple, quick, and reliable water contamination test kit for the qualitative and quantitative detection of E. coli and coliforms in water.
EC Blue is available in 2 formats, in pouches (EC Blue 100P) or in disposable bottles (EC Blue 100). Both contain the exact amount of dry medium required to prepare 100 mL of water sample for microbiological analysis. All the components are ready to use and do not require weighing or autoclaving.
- Simple, easy, and ready to use: no preparation, 100mL of water tested directly and incubated at 35 ± 2° C.
- Fast result: EC Blue provides reliable test results in 24 hours.
- Safe and clear-cut: easy interpretation based on a chromogenic (blue) colour reaction for coliforms AND simple UV lamp fluorescence detection for E. coli.
- Stable and easy to store: no need for refrigeration, a shelf life of 2 years at room temperature if protected from light.
- Reliable results: simple interpretation using the EC Blue Comparator.
- Quantitative E. coli and coliform determination: EC BlueQuant MPN device allows the user to perform a standardised MPN method, without prior serial dilution, to enumerate microbial contamination down to 2 CFU.

FAQ
Find the most frequently asked questions about EC Blue Products
EC blue can be used to test E. coli and coliform contamination in a broad range of water samples including drinking water, seawater, sewage water, chlorinated water (e.g. swimming pool) etc.
Yes, EC Blue is suitable for chlorinated water analysis, the addition of sodium thiosulfate is recommended for water with a high concentration of chlorine.
The EC Blue formulation contains 2 different substrates: one chromogenic for the detection of coliforms and a fluorescent substrate that is specifically hydrolyse by E. coli.
Coliforms give a green/green-blue colouration after 24h of incubation at 37 °C and E. coli produce fluorescence, observable under UV-light.
The EC Blue product range can be used either qualitatively or quantitatively for the analysis of water.
EC Blue 100 (05593-EB0-080) and 100P (05591-EBP-100) provide a qualitative assessment of water contamination.
Quantitative measurement of bacterial contamination of water can be performed using EC Blue in combination with EC BlueQuant (06517-EBQ-018) using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method.
EC Blue 100 (05593-EB0-080) and 100P (05591-EBP-100) are stable for 24 months at room temperature (avoiding light exposure)
Coliform positive sample displays a green to blue/green colour, visible to the eye.
E. coli positive samples are fluorescent after exposure to a UV light.
If interpretation is ambiguous, the EC Blue comparator (06514-EBC-001) will allow discrimination of positive and negative samples for both E. coli and coliform contamination.
Incubate samples at 37 °C for 24h.
Food testing using CompactDry plates requires minimal lab equipment including pipettes, a sterile preparation area, and an incubator (a suitable homogeniser would be required for solid food homogenisation)
EC Blue bottles should be disposed according to local regulations for biohazardous materials.
