Coliforms are gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, non-spore forming bacteria and commonly found in animal intestines and soil. The term “coliform” refers to enteric bacteria found in foodstuff such as meat, shellfish, dairy products, other foods and in particular, water. Bacteria such as Shigella, Salmonella, Yersinia, Citrobacter, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter are all coliforms, but the most recognized coliform is Escherichia coli.
Testing for the presence of coliform is important in the food industry, particularly in dairy production.

Salmonella species
CompactDry SL
CompactDry SL for Salmonella species
CompactDry SL detects Salmonella using 20 – 24 hours pre-enrichment steps.
The plates are based on the combination of different test principles:
- Alkalinisation of the medium, by Salmonella lysine decarboxylase the medium colour will change from blue-purple to yellow. The yellow coloration spreads over the plate due to Salmonella motility.
- Greening of the colony, caused by decomposition of chromogenic substrate with a specific Salmonella enzyme. Black colonies are generated by hydrogen sulphide producing Salmonella.

FAQ
Find the most frequently asked questions about the products in the CompactDry range
The CompactDry dehydrated culture media plate system is easy to use with a very simple 3-step protocol.
Remove the cap and dispense 1 mL of sample in the middle of the CompactDry plate. The sample diffuses passively and evenly across the dehydrated media sheet, rehydrating the dry medium into a gel within seconds.
Replace the cap, label, and incubate for the appropriate time and at the required temperature. Following incubation, count the number of coloured microbial colonies.
Species characterisation is made easy due to the chromogenic agents colouring specific microbes. Enumeration of coloured colonies can be done manually or using BactLab mobile phone application.
Liquid samples are tested directly or by using the filter method. Solid and processed foodstuffs are tested using samples prepared in a Stomacher or alternative food homogeniser.
Testing foodstuffs using CompactDry growth media requires basic laboratory equipment – pipettes, a microbiological handling area, and an incubator.
Because the CompactDry range is made up of dehydrated chromogenic media, it is very stable and can be stored at room temperature. It has a shelf life of between 16 and 24 months.
Yes, CompactDry plates can be used to test all types of foodstuffs and beverages; solid food samples need to be diluted in the appropriate buffer and homogenised. Then, 1 mL of homogenised sample can be applied directly onto CompactDry plates.
Yes, CompactDry dehydrated growth media plates are suitable for the membrane filtration method.
After liquid filtration, the 47 mm filter is deposited directly onto a re-hydrated CompactDry plate with 1 mL of buffer.
Most CompactDry plates have been certified by AOAC, MicroVal and NordVal using ISO method. Details of ISO methods used during validation can be obtained on request at support@diagnostics-eu.shimadzu.com
CompactDry products have different temperature and incubation times depending on the microbial target.
Please refer to the product page for further details about experimental conditions (temperature and incubation time)
The CompactDry product range allows the growth and detection of either a bacterial gender (e.g. CompactDry CF, LS, SL) or a specific bacterial species (e.g. CompactDry ECO, LM, PA, VP and X-SA)
CompactDry contains chromogenic culture media to ease the detection and enumeration of specific bacteria.
For each CompactDry, colony colouration is specific to a bacterial gender and/or species to facilitate interpretation.
CompactDry plates are stored at room temperature (up to 30 °C) with a shelf life between 16 and 24 months, depending on the reference.
CompactDry products cover a wide range of microbial contaminants in foodstuffs.
At this time, up to 15 microbial targets can be detected using CompactDry plates.
Yes, some CompactDry plates were developed to specifically detect pathogens in foodstuffs such as Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Vibrio parahaemolyticus.
Yes, CompactDry plates are suitable for environmental testing of surfaces using CompactDry Swabs.
CompactDry plates should be disposed in agreement with local disposal regulations for biohazardous substances.
Water safety can be assessed using CompactDry plates (TC, EC, AQ) in combination with the membrane filtration method.
CompactDry EC detects coliforms and Escherichia coli in foodstuffs, whereas CompactDry ECO detects only Escherichia coli.
Food testing using CompactDry plates requires minimal lab equipment including pipettes, a sterile preparation area, and an incubator (a suitable homogeniser would be required for solid food homogenisation)
CompactDry plates are ready-to-use sterile plates, there is no need for preparation or sterilisation. Dehydrated media allows storage at room temperature and a long shelf life compared to traditional agar plates.
